Rachel Levine-Katz of Montreal knows how hard it can be to see someone you love struggle with cancer. In 2009, her grandfather passed away from leukemia and her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Like so many of the members who visit Wellspring centres each year, Rachel felt helpless and wanted to do something to make a difference in the lives of people battling cancer and their families.
Rachel and her friends created Ride Beside / Cote a Cote, riding their bikes from Montreal to Ottawa. The journey took over three days in June 2010, but the group persevered, fuelled by their determination to fight cancer and by their love of cycling. An enthusiastic support team of four adults and two children drove, cooked and set up camp for the seven bikers. Together, they raised an incredible $11,073.11 in support of Wellspring’s Centre of Innovation.
When the group was deciding which charity to support, they were particularly interested in organizations that offered practical services and which weren’t affiliated with a specific type of cancer. Rachel and her friends had heard great things about Wellspring, and upon learning more, were excited about supporting the development of innovative new programs to help those dealing with the effects of cancer.
By creating their own event, Rachel and her friends had the freedom to design something that was meaningful and fun for them all. They appointed a fundraising team, which co-ordinated fundraising efforts that included an event at a local bar that donated space and held a raffle. Others were responsible for training and arranging their route, food and camp sites during the ride.
At the finish line, the team celebrated at Rachel’s parents’ home in Ottawa, along with friends and family. A group of supporters volunteered to drive the riders home. Ride Beside was a great success, thanks to the enthusiasm of Rachel and her fellow riders.
Wellspring is incredibly thankful to the Ride Beside Team for their inspiring passion and support.
