Wellspring Alberta has received a charitable grant of $225,000 from the Petro-Canada CareMakers Foundation<\/a>, in support of Wellspring\u2019s caregiver programs. This funding will allow Wellspring to meet the increasing demand for caregiver support, who play a crucial role in their loved one\u2019s cancer journey.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have always known that caregivers are deeply impacted by cancer, which is why, in addition to programs created for their specific needs, all Wellspring programs are open to caregivers,\u201d said Joanne Aime, CEO, Wellspring Alberta. \u201cThanks to the support of the Petro-Canada CareMakers Foundation, we can continue our efforts to support and empower caregivers and ensure they have access to the resources and community they need to sustain their own well-being while providing care for their loved ones.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to research, caregivers are often pushed beyond their limits, resulting in neglect of their own health when caring for a loved one with cancer. In some cases, this can amount to tremendous mental, physical and emotional strain.<\/p>\n

“Caregiving impacted my mental health by developing chronic stress, emotional distress, burnout, sleep disturbances and brain fog. Wellspring’s caregiving programs improved my mental health by being a constant reminder that a caregiver is still human, and we should take some time and take care of our own well-being, which can include going for walks and focusing on specific sounds and smells to help ease chronic stress, certain breathing techniques to help ease anxiety and to help an individual sleep better, and talking to someone who you trust to help because no one is alone when you’re caregiving for a parent, grandparent or spouse,” said Alexis, a Wellspring member.<\/p>\n

Wellspring\u2019s evidence-informed programs provide strategies related to fatigue, financial strain, relationship changes, burnout, and other aspects of the caregiving journey. All Wellspring programs are open to caregivers and are designed to improve physical, mental, and emotional health during cancer. Additionally, caregivers can find peer support and community through informal support groups.<\/p>\n

The Petro-Canada CareMakers Foundation, on a mission to support those who care for their loved ones in need, shares Wellspring\u2019s commitment to empower and invest in family caregivers.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are proud to support organizations like Wellspring Alberta which are dedicated to empowering family caregivers.\u00a0Through these grants, we are helping to ensure that family caregivers receive the resources, support and recognition they deserve as they navigate their unique and often challenging journey,\u201d said Leila Fenc, executive director of Petro-Canada CareMakers Foundation.<\/p>\n
