Wellspring Alberta continues to grow, bringing compassionate support and connection to more communities across the province. Over the past two years, in-person programs have launched in Red Deer, Lethbridge, and Medicine Hat, giving residents new opportunities to access valuable resources and connect with others impacted by cancer.<\/p>\n

The first program offered in each new region has been Cancer Connect<\/a>, which provides a safe space for people living with cancer and their caregivers to share experiences, learn strategies for living well, and foster meaningful connections. The program has been extremely well-received, reflecting the strong demand for support outside of Calgary.<\/p>\n

Southern Alberta Progress<\/strong><\/h4>\n

\u201cWe recently completed a needs assessment for both Lethbridge and Red Deer, and we are now looking to expand programming in these communities,\u201d said Mihaela Turtureanu, Outreach Manager in Calgary. \u201cThe assessment for both Red Deer and Lethbridge showed strong interest in two additional programs: COMPASS for the Caregiver<\/a>, and a gentle movement option such as yoga<\/a>. The cancer centres in both communities have been very supportive and are looking forward to seeing Wellspring\u2019s in-person programs available to their patients.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mihaela noted that Wellspring has maintained a long-standing presence at the Red Deer Cancer Centre, where volunteer Brett, a dedicated Community Connector, provides information and guidance to patients.<\/p>\n

In Medicine Hat, the next step in the southern region will be the expansion of Compass for the Caregiver program to a six-week program starting on October 20, 2025 based on participant feedback. After the program concludes, a needs assessment will help determine future programming in the area.<\/p>\n

Mihaela is also working to increase awareness across southern Alberta through initiatives such as placing Wellspring messaging on hospital monitors and connecting with local Primary Care Networks.<\/p>\n

Northern Alberta Outreach<\/strong><\/h4>\n

In the north, Wellspring is bringing its first in-person program to Grande Prairie<\/a> this November.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve been hearing from a lot of people that there has been a gap in this kind of support here, and now we are building relationships. I\u2019m really excited to help bring this northern Alberta outreach forward,\u201d said Mihaela.<\/p>\n

Brittany Pollard, recently hired as Outreach Coordinator for Grande Prairie and the surrounding area, has been cultivating partnerships with the Grande Prairie Cancer Centre and Primary Care Network to ensure programs meet local needs.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve been conducting a needs assessment in close collaboration with the Grande Prairie Cancer Centre throughout the community, holding focus groups. The team has been meeting with cancer care staff, individuals diagnosed with cancer, and caregivers in the Grande Prairie region to understand what\u2019s missing and how Wellspring can fill those gaps. There is a real enthusiasm for the programs and additional in-person support. Those affected by cancer, as well as health care providers, are excited to see support coming directly to our community,\u201d said Brittany.<\/p>\n

Additionally, Wellspring is fostering partnerships with key community stakeholders, including the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital Foundation, Primary Care Network, City of Grande Prairie, Alberta Northwest Palliative Care Society, and others.<\/p>\n

Building Community Through Volunteers<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Volunteers, known as Community Connectors, play an essential role in Wellspring\u2019s outreach efforts. They welcome participants, share information, and help programs thrive in each region. Wellspring is actively seeking volunteers in Grande Prairie who have experienced cancer or caregiving for someone with cancer.<\/p>\n

\u201cCommunity Connectors are the heartbeat of our programs. They help people feel seen, supported, and connected. Their lived experience allows them to offer genuine guidance and compassion to those navigating cancer,\u201d said Brittany.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs Wellspring continues to expand its presence across Alberta, the focus remains on fostering connection, providing education, and supporting the well-being of those impacted by cancer,\u201d adds Mihaela.<\/p>\n

From southern towns like Lethbridge and Red Deer to northern communities like Grande Prairie, Wellspring is helping people feel less alone and more empowered every step of the way.<\/p>\n
