She formed so many caring and lasting friendships throughout her life,\u201d said Dorothy, still feeling the sting of the loss of her sister, who was a well-loved sister, friend and aunt, and a respected teacher for many years.<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy and her sister Velma were avid quilters, often sending away for the same pattern blocks, especially ones featuring animals that were akin to Velma\u2019s heart. Velma also enjoyed cross-stitching, and the pair shared a passion for card making.<\/p>\n<p>After Velma\u2019s passing, Dorothy decided to sell some of Velma\u2019s quilting and cross-stitching kits, and turn her love of artful creation into a gift for Wellspring Calgary \u2013 a community that Velma loved to visit in the months before she died.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe joined Wellspring with a friend who was a cancer survivor and she told me, \u2018We have so much fun there and it\u2019s peaceful too. The people are so kind and they don\u2019t dwell on how awful they feel, they dwell on how good they feel together, and how much they enjoy the programs\u2019,\u201d said Dorothy.<\/p>\n<figure><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8105\" title=\"VelmaBeebe\" src=\"https:\/\/wellspring.ca\/alberta\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2023\/08\/VelmaBeebe-1-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"VelmaBeebe\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wellspring.ca\/alberta\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2023\/08\/VelmaBeebe-1-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/wellspring.ca\/alberta\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2023\/08\/VelmaBeebe-1.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/figure>\n<figure><figcaption>Dorothy&#8217;s sister, Velma Beebe<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Dorothy explained that Velma\u2019s cancer advanced quickly, depriving her of the energy to participate in programs, but Velma still found her way to Carma House almost weekly. \u201cShe just loved going to Wellspring to have tea and talk with people \u2013 she would start up a conversation with anyone. She really found it an enjoyable way to spend her time,\u201d said Dorothy.<\/p>\n<p>When Dorothy called Wellspring to offer a donation of the proceeds from some of Velma\u2019s creative pursuits, the gift was welcomed with gratitude and a special recollection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was always a pleasure to have Velma in the centre, she lit up the room,\u201d said Wellspring centre manager, Nancy Bilodeau.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Velma Beebe found solace and joy at Wellspring Calgary.
