Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction



For centuries, meditation has been used as a means to achieve healthy thought management by exercising control over thoughts and emotions. Meditation practices can help reduce stress, improve capacity to cope and to feel better both emotionally and physically. Mindfulness is a therapeutic technique where one focuses awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one’s feelings, thoughts and bodily sensations. In this group program, cancer patients and caregivers are led by professional meditation leaders to learn and practice mindfulness meditation exercises and ways of integrating the exercises into their daily life. This program is better suited to those who are familiar with meditation and who can accommodate time for meditation in their daily lives. A half-day introductory session is held prior to the start of a new series of sessions in order to fully explain the program and the commitment needed to home practice.   Members must put their names on an interest list and then are registered into a new program series when enrolment numbers are sufficient.
