Board of Directors Volunteer Opportunity: Treasurer  

Wellspring Chinguacousy is a vital community-based organization offering free, professionally-led programs and services to individuals and families living with cancer across Brampton and Peel Region. With deep roots in the local community, Wellspring is entering an exciting new chapter of growth and expansion under the leadership of a new Executive Director and Board Chair. This is a unique and energizing time to join the Board, contribute your expertise, and help shape the future of an organization that plays a critical role in supporting the emotional, social, and practical well-being of those living with cancer. 

We are currently seeking a Treasurer to join our volunteer Board of Directors and lead our Finance Committee! 
 

About the Role 

As a member of the Board and Chair of the Finance Committee, the Treasurer plays a critical leadership role in ensuring the financial health, sustainability, and accountability of the organization. 

Board Responsibilities (4 board meetings per year): 

  • Provide clear financial insight to support strategic decision-making 
  • Help the Board understand the organization’s financial position, risks, and opportunities 
  • Serve as a key liaison between the Finance Committee and the full Board 

Finance Committee Responsibilities (8 virtual meetings per year): 

The Treasurer will chair the Finance Committee and provide oversight and leadership in the following areas: 

  • Financial Planning and Budgeting: Guide the development and approval of the annual budget in alignment with organizational goals 
  • Financial Monitoring and Reporting: Review and interpret financial statements; flag risks or variances and support corrective actions 
  • Risk Management and Internal Controls: Support the development of policies to safeguard assets and ensure regulatory compliance 
  • Audit and Accountability: Oversee the audit process and implement auditor recommendations; lead reviews of procurement and spending policies 
  • Financial Capacity Building: Strengthen Board understanding of financial issues and help guide sustainability strategies 

Committee meetings are held virtually for 30–60 minutes, typically the month before and after each Board meeting. Members are expected to review materials in advance and attend regularly.  

Who We’re Looking For: 

We are seeking a Treasurer who brings: 

  • A CPA designation or equivalent experience in finance, accounting, or audit 
  • Deep understanding of nonprofit financial management and oversight 
  • Strategic thinking and a collaborative, transparent leadership style 
  • Comfort chairing meetings and explaining financial concepts to diverse audiences 
     

We strongly encourage applications from individuals with: 

  • Lived experience with cancer (as a patient, survivor, or caregiver) 
  • Deep roots or networks in Peel Region, particularly in South Asian, Black, or other communities that reflect the diversity of Peel Region 
     

Time Commitment: 

  • Approximately 4 Board meetings per year (evenings, hybrid or virtual) 
  • Approximately 8 Finance Committee meetings per year 
  • Additional time to review documents, prepare reports, and liaise with the Executive Director
