In April 2021, Sohum’s mother, Pooja, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Almost overnight, life at home changed. Sohum’s older sister left for college, household responsibilities shifted, and she found herself navigating her mother’s diagnosis while still in middle school. As Pooja underwent chemotherapy and struggled with the physical and emotional effects of treatment, the family leaned on one another in new ways. Pooja remembers her daughter checking on her during long, difficult days of recovery.<\/p>\n

“She would come in every now and then just to wake me up, just to eat something. She would say, ‘I made this, can you just eat something?’ Those little gestures, those little connections we made at that time… I will always remember them.”<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

During her cancer journey, Pooja found support at Wellspring Chinguacousy. Surrounded by others facing similar challenges, she regained the confidence she needed to return to work.<\/p>\n

“When I came here, I saw people who were going through the same thing. Talking to them gave me a lot of comfort. I was able to go back to my work with confidence after I came here.”<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

That support stayed with Sohum. After winning $250 in a writing contest for an essay about her family’s experience in high school, she knew exactly where she wanted the money to go.<\/p>\n

“I thought I should give back to the community that really supported and helped my mother.” <\/strong><\/em>Using her prize money, she purchased satin pillowcases, something that had brought her mother comfort during treatment, and donated them to Wellspring.<\/p>\n

But she didn’t stop there. Sohum launched a GoFundMe campaign, created social media accounts, and reached out to anyone who might be willing to help. Many emails went unanswered. Many messages were never opened. Still, she persevered.<\/p>\n

“You face these challenges, but it’s very important to keep trying and keep persevering… Even if one in a hundred people respond, that’s still something.”<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\"Sohum<\/p>\n

Her determination paid off. Sohum raised more than $2,500 for Wellspring, and what began as a single act of kindness has grown into her own organization,\u00a0Say the Word<\/a>, which now provides silk pillowcases to people undergoing cancer treatment.<\/p>\n

We’re sharing Sohum’s story because it reminds us that meaningful change often starts with one small step.<\/p>\n

As Sohum says,\u00a0“The first thing can be even sending an email… It’s very important to take that first step.”<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n
