Exercise for Cancer to Enhance Living Well (EXCEL)
What is Project EXCEL?
EXCEL stands for Exercise for Cancer to Enhance Living Well. It is a 5-year Canada-wide study, funded by the Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR), the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS), and the Alberta Cancer Foundation (ACF). This implementation science project will increase the accessibility of exercise programs for rural and remote cancer survivors, empowering them to move more and thus achieve the many benefits that being physically active provides.
What is EXCEL offering?
EXCEL is offering FREE, 12-week exercise programs for individuals living in rural and remote areas, who are undergoing or recovering from cancer treatment. We offer classes online through a secure video-conferencing platform, and where possible, in-person (post-COVID). Group exercise classes run twice a week in a circuit format, focusing on cardiovascular, resistance training, balance, and stretching exercises. Exercises are performed at a low-to-moderate intensity and are tailored to each individual, based on health conditions, medical limitations, and comfort levels.
Regardless of your experience with exercise, EXCEL’s instructors who are trained in exercise oncology, create a non-judgmental, safe, and supportive environment for all.
