Volunteer Online Discussion Forum Moderators – remote

Location: This position is remote. 

Wellspring Cancer Support Foundation is seeking dedicated individuals to serve as Online Forum Moderators. As a moderator, you will play a crucial role in fostering a supportive and informative online community for individuals affected by cancer. You will monitor discussions, enforce community guidelines, provide support and guidance to forum members, and ensure a positive and respectful atmosphere within the online platform.  

Primary Responsibilities: 

  1. Moderate Discussions: Regularly monitor forum discussions to ensure they align with the organization’s mission and community guidelines.  
  2. Enforce Guidelines: Enforce community guidelines and policies to maintain a safe, respectful, and supportive environment for all forum members.  
  3. Provide Support: Offer assistance, resources, and encouragement to forum members seeking information or support related to cancer.  
  4. Respond to Inquiries: Address inquiries, concerns, and feedback from forum members in a timely and empathetic manner.  
  5. Promote Engagement: Encourage active participation and engagement within the forum by initiating discussions, asking questions, and sharing relevant resources.  
  6. Monitor for Misconduct: Identify and address any instances of misconduct, inappropriate behavior, or conflicts within the forum.  
  7. Collaborate with Team: Work collaboratively with other moderators and staff members to improve the forum experience and address emerging needs or issues.  

Required Qualifications: 

  • Compassionate and empathetic individual with a genuine desire to support individuals affected by cancer.  
  • Meticulous attention to detail and strong organizational skills.  
  • Excellent written conversational-style communication skills.  
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interact respectfully with diverse individuals.  
  • Reliable internet access, comfort with technology, and availability to monitor the forum on a regular basis.  
  • Knowledge of cancer-related issues, resources, and support services is an asset.  
  • Must be dependable and self-motivated.  
  • Able to work effectively as an individual and as part of a team.  

Time Frame and Commitment: 

  • Moderators are required to complete an orientation prior to starting their first shift 
  • Moderators must be available at least one day per week to monitor the online forum for a minimum of 2 hours to make sure all conversations are appropriate and to address any dire situations. 
  • Check in with your supervisor after the shift via email.
