Isa, a member and dedicated volunteer at Wellspring Chinguacousy, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023. As her cancer journey began, Isa drew strength and support from her heroes. She would like to acknowledge them.
Isa’s biggest hero is her daughter Julia. “During my recovery, my daughter became my primary caretaker, my chef, my driver, my hairstylist and my puzzle companion,” Isa says. “She was a very persistent nurse, and I can still hear her reminding me, ‘Mom, it’s time for your pills.’ She made me laugh when I was feeling down.”
Her husband Emilio and her son Nico have shown Isa unwavering strength and support. “They’ve been my rocks” Isa says with gratitude. “I don’t think I could’ve gotten through the diagnosis and the recovery period if it wasn’t for their patience, strength, and comfort during the most challenging time of my life.”
“My mother-in-law, Lucia, the chef extraordinaire, prepared wonderful meals, did the laundry, and called 2-3 times a day to check on me,” Isa recounts.” I am blessed to have such a caring and selfless family member who is always there for everyone when they need her.”
Isa’s cousin Antonella, who is like a sister to her, has been another vital support. “Antonella came to take notes for me at a few appointments because I was unable to comprehend or process what was being said to me. She is still always checking in on me and is there for me at a moment’s notice when I need her,” Isa shares.
Isa also wants to acknowledge her aunt Theresa and uncle John for constantly checking in, bringing food after her surgery and offering to help whenever she needed it. “They have been so supportive, loving and concerned for me through every step of my journey,” Isa says.
Lastly, Isa remembers her dad, who has passed away, with deep affection. “He had a lot of heart issues in his life, had many surgeries and endured his share of poking and prodding. As I went through my own tests, scans, and surgery, I used to think ‘If Dad did it, I can too.’ “I knew he was beside me every step of the way,” Isa says, “especially because I was released from surgery on his birthday, so I like to think of that day as the day I became cancer-free!”
