Not only is exercise safe for most cancer patients, it’s now considered an essential component of cancer care. Research consistently shows that exercise reduces pain, fatigue, nausea, and anxiety, improves strength, mobility, mood, and quality of life, and for some cancer types, even lowers the risk of recurrence. Wellspring’s flagship Cancer Exercise program is led by exercise professionals trained and experienced in oncology, runs twice a week for 12 weeks, and is available both online and in person — making it accessible regardless of where you live or what your energy levels are on any given day. The program is open to members at any stage of cancer, and exercises are taught at a moderate level with adaptations available for every fitness level. Visit the Wellspring Cancer Exercise page to complete the intake form and get connected with the program manager to begin registration.
The research behind Wellspring’s Cancer Exercise program is both specific and substantial. A peer-reviewed study published in Current Oncology followed 229 cancer survivors enrolled in the Wellspring Cancer Exercise Program and found significant improvements in cancer-related fatigue, cardiovascular capacity, balance, social wellbeing, blood pressure, health-related quality of life, and emotional wellbeing. A landmark 2025 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine involving nearly 900 colon cancer patients found that structured exercise after chemotherapy led to significantly longer disease-free survival compared to a control group — one of the strongest pieces of evidence yet that exercise can influence cancer outcomes beyond quality of life alone. Additional published research supports exercise’s role in reducing recurrence risk for breast, prostate, and colorectal cancers.
Yes, Wellspring’s Pre-Surgical Cancer Exercise Program is specifically designed for cancer patients who are waiting for surgery and want to use that time to build physical strength and endurance in preparation. Led by a kinesiologist or physiotherapist online, the program focuses on low-intensity exercises including standing, sitting, and floor-based movements, light resistance training, and balance and coordination work — all within a low to moderate exertion level that is safe even for those experiencing significant treatment side effects or mobility challenges. Sessions run one hour, twice a week, from the time of your referral through to the date of your operation, and physician consent is required for safety. Following surgery, participants are invited to transition into Wellspring’s full 12-week Cancer Exercise program to continue their recovery.
Getting started with Wellspring’s Cancer Exercise programs begins with completing an online intake form, after which the program manager will contact you to assist with registration and match you to the right program based on your needs and circumstances. If you have a Stage 4 or advanced cancer diagnosis, you will also need to have a Physician Consent Form signed by your oncologist or family doctor before participating — this is a safety measure to ensure the program is appropriately tailored for you. Once registered, you will begin with a one-on-one assessment with an experienced cancer exercise leader. Due to demand, members are currently able to register for the Cancer Exercise program once, so it is worth reaching out sooner rather than later to secure your spot.
