Yes, shortness of breath is one of the most frequently reported and least addressed symptoms among cancer patients, and it can significantly interfere with everyday activities, emotional wellbeing, and overall quality of life. It can result from cancer itself, from treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery, or from the anxiety that often accompanies a diagnosis — and in many cases these factors compound one another. Wellspring’s Breathing Wellness program is designed specifically to address this, teaching evidence-based breathing techniques and coping strategies that studies show can help cancer patients reduce and manage breathlessness and related anxiety. The program also includes a breathlessness self-assessment and goal-setting component, so the strategies you develop are grounded in your specific experience and circumstances.

The Breathing Wellness program is a three-week program, with weekly 90-minute sessions structured around three core elements: education, practice, and peer sharing. You will begin by completing a breathlessness self-assessment and setting realistic, personalized goals for yourself — ensuring the program is grounded in your actual experience rather than a generic approach. Educational components cover how the lungs function and the causes of breathlessness in the context of cancer, while practical sessions teach specific breathing techniques and exercises you can apply immediately in daily life. There is also dedicated time in each session for sharing with other participants who are experiencing similar symptoms, which many members find to be one of the most valuable parts of the program.

The research supporting breathing and self-management interventions for cancer-related breathlessness is well-established across multiple peer-reviewed studies. A Cochrane Database systematic review on self-management interventions for breathlessness in adult cancer patients found meaningful evidence for their effectiveness, and a multicentre randomized controlled trial published in the BMJ specifically on nursing-led breathlessness interventions for lung cancer patients demonstrated significant improvements. Clinical practice guidelines from the European Society for Medical Oncology also recognize the value of non-pharmacological breathlessness management strategies for people with advanced cancer. For many participants, the benefits extend beyond breathing itself. As one Wellspring member put it: “This has improved my quality of life, even in this short span. Can’t wait to see what happens as I practice more.” The techniques taught in this program are designed to be carried forward into daily life, not just used during sessions.

Yes, and this is one of the most important aspects of the program, because breathlessness and anxiety are deeply interconnected. When breathing becomes difficult, it naturally triggers fear and panic, which in turn makes breathing harder — a cycle that can be genuinely debilitating and that standard medical treatment alone rarely breaks. The Breathing Wellness program specifically includes coping strategies for managing the anxiety that co-exists with breathlessness, helping participants understand the relationship between their physical symptoms and their emotional response, and giving them tools to interrupt that cycle in real time. Understanding the physiology of what is happening — how the lungs work, what causes breathlessness, and why anxiety amplifies it — is itself a powerful part of regaining a sense of control.

The Breathing Wellness program is designed for any cancer patient who is experiencing shortness of breath as a result of their cancer or its treatment — regardless of cancer type or where they are in their treatment journey. Whether you are currently in active treatment, recovering, or living with an ongoing diagnosis, if breathlessness is interfering with your daily activities, emotions, or quality of life, this program was built for you. The program begins with an individual breathlessness self-assessment so that your goals and strategies are tailored to your specific situation, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. Research cited in the program’s foundation includes guidelines from Cancer Care Ontario and the European Society for Medical Oncology, reflecting a broad evidence base applicable across cancer types and stages.

Participants consistently describe the program as both practically useful and meaningfully supportive — a combination that is harder to find than it sounds. One member described the sessions as “well structured, friendly and with good discussion,” adding that she “learned heaps” — capturing both the educational depth and the warm group dynamic that characterizes the program. Another participant noted improvements to her quality of life within the three-week span and expressed excitement about the continued benefits of ongoing practice. In terms of concrete outcomes, participants can expect to leave the program with a clearer understanding of what causes their breathlessness, a personal set of breathing techniques and coping strategies they have already begun to practice, and a realistic plan for managing symptoms beyond the program. The peer component, sharing with others who are navigating the same experience, is also consistently cited as a meaningful source of support and normalization.
