As Wellspring continues to champion Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, we have begun a new initiative: sharing stories from equity deserving communities. We recognize that certain communities hold unique narratives and experiences, particularly when facing the challenges of cancer.
To highlight these stories, we’re thrilled to unveil our latest endeavor: the “Diverse Experiences of Cancer” mini speaker series. This series aims to shine a spotlight on the diverse journeys and perspectives of individuals navigating cancer within underrepresented communities. By amplifying these voices, we hope to foster greater understanding, empathy, and support for those facing similar battles.
Meet our first speakers: Yinka Oladele and Dr. Ezeife
Our first event features two remarkable individuals: Yinka Oladele Dr. Doreen Ezeife. Their combined expertise and lived experiences promise to offer invaluable insights into the unique challenges faced by African/Black communities dealing with cancer.
Yinka Oladele’s journey is one of resilience and advocacy. Having lost her mother to breast cancer in 1995 and supporting her husband through his battle with Multiple Myeloma, Yinka understands firsthand the emotional and physical toll of cancer within the African community. In response to these experiences, Yinka co-founded The Oladele Foundation and the African Cancer Support Group, providing vital support and resources to fellow survivors and caregivers. Yinka’s entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to community empowerment have earned her numerous accolades, including recognition in business and community spheres.
Joining Yinka is Dr. Doreen Ezeife, an oncologist at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre in Calgary, Alberta. Her research endeavors, focusing on cancer drug access and assessing the value of new treatments, have garnered prestigious awards and grant funding, highlighting her invaluable contributions to the field.
Together, Yinka and Dr. Ezeife will delve into the complexities of cancer within African/Black communities, sharing insights, strategies, and stories aimed at empowering patients, caregivers, and advocates alike. Their combined expertise promises to inspire meaningful dialogue and action, driving us closer to a future where every individual, regardless of background, receives the support and care they deserve.
