Mourning the passing of Betty Birmingham

June 5, 2023

Wellspring Cancer Support Foundation is mourning the recent passing of Elizabeth Ann (Betty) Birmingham, a devoted philanthropist, a loyal supporter and a cherished friend and member of the Wellspring community.

In 2006, Betty joined the Wellspring Halton-Peel Centre in Oakville, as it was known at the time, as a member. Realizing that the space was too small to accommodate demand, Betty and her late husband Bruce proposed an expansion campaign for the centre and pledged a $1 million donation. As a result, the new Birmingham Gilgan House, completed in 2010, was named in their honour. Today the facility remains central to the heart of the Oakville community, profoundly impacting the lives of thousands of residents through supportive cancer care.

“Betty possessed a true philanthropic spirit,” said Christina Smith, Wellspring CEO. “Her charitable giving crossed local and national boundaries, encompassing healthcare, education, sport, arts and social services, and her incredibly generous spirit improved the lives of countless individuals. Although our hearts are heavy, we pay tribute to Betty with the deepest gratitude. Our heartfelt condolences to her children and grandchildren.”
