February 12, 2024

Presented by RBC Wealth Management, Wellspring’s Well Dressed for Spring is a fashion event like no other. Hosted by Canadian fashion icon Jeanne Beker on March 27, 2024, the evening features models who have been touched by cancer, either having been diagnosed themselves or as a caregiver to someone with cancer. After experiencing flu-like symptoms and stomach pains, Scott and Katelyn Murray received news that their son Bennett was diagnosed with a rare bone cancer called Ewing Sarcoma. Just 11 days before his sixth birthday, their world was turned upside down in what Scott describes as a parent’s “very worst nightmare.”

Now at just seven years old, Bennett has undergone 14 rounds of intense chemotherapy, 31 days of radiation, major surgery to remove the tumour on his ribs, and many hospital admissions. Thankfully, Bennett could ring the bell in April 2023, marking the beginning of his cancer-free journey.

Scott says you don’t realize the small ways in which a cancer diagnosis can impact the whole family until you’re in it, particularly if you have other children. Their youngest, Harrison, now five, was there every step of the way, often waking up to new faces while his parents were at the hospital with his older brother.

The past two years of hardship haven’t stopped the Murray family of fighters from getting back to their everyday active life. Making sure to carve out time to spend on weekends playing golf, they know how important it is to get back the months of family time that were stolen by cancer.

“What we’ve learned as a family brought us together and I think it’s really important that we continue to give back and use our voice to help others,” says Scott.

Scott and Katelyn want to thank everyone for the generosity they received along their journey, including those who donated to Wellspring. Bennett, their warm, compassionate, empathetic, athletic, charismatic superhero of a son, is walking the runway with a new spring in his step, thanks to everyone who banded together to help, even with little gestures such as sending them a text. It meant the world, and it’s a big reason why they’re encouraged to walk the runway.

“He hasn’t missed a beat. It’s amazing; kids are so resilient. They don’t fret about what adults do. We always think the worst and look ahead at what the potential outcomes or side effects could be, whereas day by day, he just goes through it. He’s a real lover of life,” says Scott.

Scott and Bennett are walking in this Wellspring’s 2024 Well Dressed for Spring event.
