Supporting Your Child When You Have Cancer

A cancer diagnosis affects the entire family, and talking with children can be one of the most challenging parts. This session provides practical guidance on how to communicate with children of different ages, including what to share, when to share it, and how to answer difficult questions. We discuss common emotional and behavioural responses, developmental considerations, relationship changes within the family, and concerns to watch for as children adjust. The session also explores the impact of cancer on parenting and couple relationships and offers practical communication strategies and tools to help families navigate these conversations with confidence and compassion.

Facilitators: Laura Pasqualino, MSW, RSW, Social Worker and Psychotherapist; Lauren McLeod, Child Life Specialist & Associate Director of Programming at Wellspring
