Bridging the Gap

Conversations about cancer can be difficult for anyone, and the way people approach them is often shaped by personal, cultural, and family influences. In South Asian communities—the largest visible minority group in Alberta—deeply rooted values around family unity and privacy can sometimes make it harder to talk openly about cancer, seek medical advice, or access support. Unfortunately, there are few cancer resources tailored to the specific needs of South Asians, leaving many to navigate the cancer journey without culturally relevant support.

At Wellspring Alberta, we are committed to changing that. Our goal is to provide meaningful support, reduce barriers to care, and create a welcoming space where South Asians affected by cancer can find information, community, and culturally informed services.

South Asian Outreach Project

South Asian communities make up the province’s largest visible minority group, yet there are minimal tailored cancer supports available for them. Thanks to the Calgary Foundation and donors Jim and Vicki Wilson, Wellspring is working to change that. With the help of community partners, Wellspring aims to design culturally informed programs and services, creating safe and accessible spaces for open conversations about cancer. This new project will build on the inherent community strengths of Calgary’s South Asian communities, and address stigma, and gaps in resources. Together we will make sure no one has to face cancer alone —including those within South Asian communities.
