Nancy Wright

Nurse (Retired)

Secretary

Nancy Wright is one of Wellspring’s most cherished founding volunteers and longstanding champions. A registered nurse with experience in cardiology and cardiovascular surgery, Nancy’s career has taken her from hospital floors in Canada and England to the front lines of compassionate care in the Calgary community and beyond. Her professional training is complemented by specialized education in palliative care, grief companioning, and cancer support, making her uniquely attuned to the physical and emotional needs of those facing serious illness.

Nancy’s involvement with Wellspring began before its doors even opened. She was among the first to join the organization, contributing both literally – lending a hand in the constructing of Carma House – and figuratively, helping shape the culture of warmth, dignity and support that defines Wellspring today. From the very beginning, she volunteered alongside her mother, Pat, forming a dynamic duo who became a comforting presence to countless members over the years.

Since it’s inception, Nancy has held numerous volunteer roles at Wellspring, including front desk volunteer, peer support, member tours, and training of new volunteers. She, and her husband Paul, are long time Wellspring donors, and have participated in major fundraising events like the Cancervive cycling tour and the Firefighter Stairclimb Challenge.

In addition to her commitment to Wellspring, Nancy has made significant volunteer contributions in her broader community and internationally. She coordinated a school-based partnership to support underserved students, led local fundraising initiatives, and directed post-disaster aid to communities in Thailand following the 2004 tsunami. She also participated in humanitarian efforts in Mexico, delivering resources to children in need.

Along with being an invaluable member of the Wellspring Board, Nancy also serves as a bedside volunteer with Alberta Health Services’ No One Dies Alone program, providing presence and comfort to individuals at end of life.

Dr. Maureen McCall

PALLIATIVE CARE CONSULTANT, AHS

Director

Maureen has been a Family Physician in Red Deer for 35 years, providing comprehensive care in the community, clinic and hospital. During the last 10 years, her focus turned to Palliative Care. She is as a member of the Central Zone Palliative and End of Life Team and a consultant to the Red Deer Hospice. Maureen was honoured to receive a Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal (2022) for advancing the timely provision of Palliative Care in Red Deer and Central Alberta.

Maureen grew up all over Alberta (Calgary, Banff, Lethbridge, Fort McMurray and Edmonton) and completed undergrad studies in Genetics and then Medicine at the University of Alberta. In mid-career, she went back to school to study International Health (Harvard) and then spent many years balancing part-time family practice in Red Deer with work on various public health projects around the world.  Maureen and her husband spent 2 years in Nepal where she led a rural health project and where they became parents, adopting their daughter and eventually sponsoring 2 foster sons to finish high school in Canada. Her family, together with a group of friends and neighbours, also supported two Syrian refugee families and Maureen’s Spanish language skills allowed her to be Family Doctor to many of Red Deer’s Spanish speaking immigrants. Now semi-retired, Maureen volunteers as an English tutor for newcomers and sits on the Red Deer Public Library Board.

One of Maureen’s patients introduced her to Wellspring many years ago but the fact that programs were only in Calgary or Edmonton then made it difficult for her patients to benefit from them. With the advent of online programming and Wellspring’s province-wide outreach strategy, Maureen became a Red Deer volunteer and a member of the Board. She is especially excited to see enthusiastic uptake of Wellspring’s in-person programs outside of the ‘big cities,’ including a Cancer Connect support program that has been running in Red Deer since 2023. Maureen’s hobbies are hiking, biking, reading and knitting.
