Outreach Manager (maternity leave cover)

Wellspring Alberta is a charitable organization that supports, informs, and empowers those diagnosed with cancer by helping them address the fear, isolation, disruption and practical problems cancer can bring to their lives.  An affiliate of the Wellspring Cancer Support Foundation, Wellspring Alberta provides a comprehensive range of programs, support, resources, so anyone living with cancer and the people who care about them can improve the quality of their lives. All programs and services are informed by evidence and offered free of charge and without referral in three centres and online. Our vision is that no one has to face cancer alone. 

Wellspring Alberta’s work is made possible through the generous donations of individuals, corporations, foundations and grassroots fundraisers, and with the efforts of committed volunteers, dedicated staff and skilled contracted program leaders.  

 

The Opportunity: 

Reporting to the program director, the outreach manager is responsible for strategically developing, implementing and evaluating Wellspring Alberta’s regional and rural outreach strategy. As a maternity leave coverage, this position is a full-time 16-month employee contract, with the possibility of extension. The successful candidate should live within commuting distance to one of our centres in Calgary or Edmonton. Occasional travel to communities across Alberta is required. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required.  

 

Responsibilities: 

Leadership:  

  • Advise the Wellspring Alberta leadership team on strategic opportunities, strengths, weakness and threats to the outreach strategy and participate in the strategic and operational planning process. 
  • Build trusting relationships with internal and external stakeholders at all levels by modelling thoughtful, authentic and adaptive leadership. 
  • Follow through and implementation of commitments made to government and donors.  
  • Contribute to building a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion through sharing learnings and insights from a regional and remote lens.   
  • Demonstrate role-model behaviours that encourage a safe and wellness orientated culture that aligns with the vision and mission of Wellspring Alberta. 
  • Supervise the northern Alberta outreach coordinator. 

Building meaningful connections:  

  • Develop meaningful relationships with health and community partners to create sustainable shared solutions to meet unmet supportive care needs of adults living with cancer, their caregivers and families in regional and remote communities across Alberta. 
  • Manage the provincial community connector volunteer team and strategy, ensuring effective communication, fostering engagement, and implementing retention and recognition initiatives to build a motivated and dedicated volunteer network.
  • Provide coaching, support and supervision to community connector volunteers, sustaining an atmosphere of care and appreciation.  
  • Manage the recruitment, onboarding and training of outreach program leaders and the framework for launching in-person outreach programs.   
  • Strengthen relationships and build collaborative engagement with all 15 community and regional cancer centres.  
  • Support strategic philanthropic relationships with regional government relations, donors and community partners.  
  • Closely collaborate with the communications team to build awareness of Wellspring in regional and remote communities across Alberta, sharing learnings and insights from an outreach lens.  
  • Primary point of contact for professionals and organizations outside of Calgary and Edmonton city limits on any cancer support matter.

Co-creating cancer support communities: 

  • Using a community participatory development approach identify community assets and partners to implement Wellspring Aberta’s outreach program model with the aim of building stronger cancer support communities in rural Alberta.  
  • Ensure Wellspring Alberta is active in and supportive of cancer support networks across the province through which we leverage knowledge and build capacity.  
  • Represent Wellspring Alberta on collaborative working groups, councils and at events regularly delivering presentations. 
  • Manage all programming outside of Calgary and Edmonton’s city limits, including program planning, scheduling, organizing and evaluating by working closely with the program director and program coordinators.  
  • Ensure that Wellspring Alberta’s programs are implemented and maintained according to Wellspring Alberta’s sound, quality-focused, evidence-informed and member driven principles (non-negotiables), and are consistent with the protocol established by the Wellspring Cancer Support Foundation and our affiliation agreement. 
  • Ensure the long-term sustainability and efficacy of the outreach strategy including strategic succession planning. 
  • Inform data requirements for reporting, ongoing development and evaluation of the outreach strategy collaborating with the Data team.  
  • Prepare cost estimates and monitor expenditures for Wellspring Alberta leadership team in relation to the outreach strategy. 
  • Assist in creating a culture of philanthropy across Alberta including identifying funding partnership opportunities, contributing to grant proposals and reports as required. 
  • Oversee the outreach strategy to ensure the smooth flow of day-to-day program operations, the inclusion of a provincial lens for all members, and cost-efficient operations.  
  • Develop and share member and impact success stories demonstrating the value of the outreach strategy to members, donors, and partners 

 

Required knowledge and skills:  

Education 

  • A minimum of a post-secondary degree in an applicable field or equivalent
  • Relevant training certifications
  • Professional registration in good standing as applicable

Experience 

  • 5 years of experience in the non-profit sector and/or program delivery setting
  • Demonstrated program planning and implementation experience
  • Community development experience working with diverse populations
  • Work experience in rural, remote and/or smaller community settings
  • Health and wellness field experience
  • Technologically proficient
  • High degree of proficiency in Microsoft suite
  • Zoom, Salesforce, Teams and comfort learning additional applications an asset
  • Strong understanding of the impact of cancer on individuals and families is an asset
